TEWU members are critical component of education system- Lumour

Wa, June 8, GNA - Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of Trades Union Congress said its members are a critical component of the educational delivery system that could not be taken for a granted or treated as by-products.

"This is because so much emphasis is being placed on the classroom teacher while many people forget that it is not only the teachers' work that makes the education sector complete."

Mr Peter Lumor, National Chairman of TEWU said this at the Upper West Regional Quadrennial Delegates' conference of the Union in Wa on Tuesday. He said Government had taken note of this fact, hence the extension of teachers retention premium to TEWU members.

The Conference is a prelude to the National conference to be held at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi in August this year.

Deliberations at the conference are likely to be dominated by the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure,

The delegates will deal with the challenges that the Fair Wages and Salary Commission and the Ghana Labour Commission (Act 651) posed to the Union and discuss constitutional amendments, adopt resolutions and elect regional officers.

Mr Lumor said the introduction of Information and Communication Technology into the working environment work would lead to the employment of more hands.

He warned that some workers could be thrown out of work if they did not retrain and retool themselves.

Mr Mahamadu Seidu Bogobiri, Deputy General Secretary of the Union said TEWU as part of organised labour would continue to ensure that the salary structures of members were improved through negotiated base pay and pay-point relativity for each year.

He said proposals on the base pay and pay-point relativity for this year had already been submitted.

Mr Iddrisu Mahama, Acting Regional Director of Education in a speech read on his behalf said Ghana Education Service employees should bear in mind that Management reserved the right to transfer any official to wherever his/her services were best needed.
