TEWU condemns police brutality on students

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has expressed deep concern about the brutal manner the police suppressed the peaceful demonstration by university students in protest over new user fees.

In a resolution adopted at its meeting in Accra, TEWU said students, like all workers or any group of citizens, have the constitutional right to hold a peaceful demonstration on any issue that affects them. It, therefore, appealed to the police to exercise extreme restraint in handling such peaceful demonstrations.

The union further urged the government, university authorities and the students to continue dialoguing on the burning issue of cost sharing to achieve an amicable solution until a long-term solution to it is found.
