TEWU Wants New Salaries Paid At the End of June

The University of Ghana branch of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) has asked the authorities to pay the new salaries by the end of this month.

In a resolution addressed to the Registrar, University of Ghana, dated June 14, TEWU's leadership said, "the union would not be in a position to control the anger of its members if management is unable to pay by that date or offer any tangible alternative to reduce the suffering, anxiety and agitation of members."

Mr Peter Lumor, Chairman and Mr George Abugah, Secretary signed the resolution. It was copied to the General Secretary, TEWU, the Vice Chancellor and Finance Officer, University of Ghana.

The resolution said when the government in April announced a new minimum daily wage of 5,500 cedis, the union made representations to management for an increase.

It noted that during the year, transport fares had gone up as a result of a 64 per cent increase in the price of fuel and 100 per cent water and electricity rates. Telephone rates have also gone up as well as the general consumer price levels.

"Despite these changes and increases in prices, the salary level of our members remain the same and they remain pregnant with expectation of positive change in respect of their salary levels."
