Suspects in Bawku Crisis Airlifted to Accra for Trial

Bolgatanga, July 1, GNA - Seventeen people suspected to be involved in the Bawku conflict were on Tuesday airlifted from Tamale to Accra to ensure speedy investigations and trails.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ofosu Mensah-Gyeabour, Upper East Regional Police Commander, briefing the media in Bolgatanga before the departure of the suspects by road from Bolgatanga to Tamale to be airlifted to Accra, explained that the reasons for their being sent to Accra was to fast-track investigations into their cases.

He said it would also prevent relatives and friends of the suspects in the Region from always pestering the Police personnel investigating their cases.

He explained that for six months now the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council and the Government and other stakeholders had been trying to bring calm to Bawku, but some few individuals were taking the law into their own hands by engaging themselves in nefarious activities. DCP Mensah-Gyeabour pointed out that the Government could not continue to spend huge sums of monies and resources in the Bawku crisis because of few individuals, who would want to trample upon the law. He said Government was committed to the promotion of justice and bringing peace to Bawku and noted that the suspects, when found culpable would be made to face the full rigours of the law.

He stated that the suspects involved in the Bawku conflict would be thoroughly investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Accra with assistance from the Upper East Regional CID and the necessary sanctions taken against the offenders. DCP Mensah-Gyeabour warned people, who continued to fan the Bawku conflict, to desist from that since they would be made to dance to the tune of their music when caught.
