Tragedy struck the Penkwasi suburb of the Sunyani East Municipality in the Bono Region when a devastating fire engulfed a carpentry shop, claiming the lives of two individuals.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is currently investigating the cause of the fire, which resulted in the deaths of Reagan Kofi Atuahene and Alhassan Sherif Majeed, as reported by citinewsroom.com on August 19, 2025.
The victims were trapped inside the burning building and were unable to escape the blaze. Their remains have been recovered and taken to the morgue at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire began around midnight. Since the start of the year, the Bono Region has recorded 158 fire outbreaks, raising growing concerns about fire safety in the area.
One of the shop workers, Zakari Abdul Mali, who witnessed the incident, described the experience, "When we woke up, the entire place was filled with smoke. We had to open the door. Three of us managed to escape, but two were trapped inside."
Rachel Duku, the shop owner’s sister, also shared her account: "The door was locked, but I managed to open it and get outside. By that time, the fire had already engulfed my brother's shop, and five young men were sleeping inside."
The Ghana National Fire Service, represented by ACFO II Cecil Risch Addo, the Bono Regional Commander, is working diligently to determine the cause of the fire.
"We have begun investigations and are gathering clues about what happened. Everyone can be assured that the complete facts will be made available," he stated.
Updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
