A Circuit Court in Sunyani has sentenced a 69-year-old druggist to 17 years in prison for selling expired drugs, in violation of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court, presided over by Mr. Sylvester Nii Okai Ablorh, imposed a fine of GH¢120,000 on the convict, Nana Agyemang Badu, who operated an over-the-counter drug store at Chiraa in the Sunyani West Municipality. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional two-year prison term.
During the hearing on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, Police Inspector Sylvia Serwaa, the prosecutor, informed the court that in 2022, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) conducted an inspection exercise in Chiraa and discovered large quantities of expired drugs at the convict’s premises.
The matter was subsequently referred to the Bono Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID), leading to the arrest of the suspect and his arraignment before the court. Although the accused initially pleaded not guilty, the case proceeded through multiple adjournments.
At the final hearing, the court found Nana Agyemang Badu guilty and handed down the sentence.
