Some residents at Nima have expressed displeasure over government’s decision to facelift the area into an ultra-modern residential enclave.

According to them, the news came as a shock particularly because their community heads were not involved in processes leading to the final decision.

Speaking in an interview with Ghanaweb some residents advised the Minister of Works and Housing to first focus on facelifting his hometown Kyebi before considering working on their area because as far as they are concerned, they are comfortable with the current state of Nima and believe it needs no facelift.

On Tuesday 14 May, 2019, The Works and Housing Minister, Samuel Atta Akyea reiterated that government is set to embark on a major facelift project in the Nima and Mamobi areas.

According to him, the redevelopment of the slum is in line with the president’s vision of Inner City and Development.

The popular suburbs in Accra according to the minister will be turned into world class residential enclaves.

This decision has created a lot of tension for residents in the Nima community, many of them panicking about the resultant loss of their properties and businesses.

Some market women say the facelift will make them jobless as it will affect the market.

They also questioned government about the rationale behind the resolution and what they intend to do with the market during the face lift process.

A resident said, ”Before you put up such a project you need to consult the elders of the community especially the chiefs, opinion leaders and the youth. Nothing has been done and then all of a sudden you go out and announce it which of course has created tension in Nima. Where are you relocating the people to?”

“We are ready for Atta-Akyea because he has disrespected us. We will face him boot for boot. We want our Nima this way” another resident added

The residents are appealing to government to make a broader consultation among the elders of the communities before making a step to facelift the Nima-Mamobi area.
