Students shouldn't shield recalcitrant students-Education Minister

Accra, Oct 25,GNA- Mr Kwadwo Baah Weredu, Minister of Education Youth and Sports on Saturday called upon students not to shield recalcitrant students but expose them for disciplinary action to be taken against them.

"I was glad at the way students of Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) cooperated with authorities to expose those four students who destroyed the school properties", he said. The Minister was speaking at the installation of a new chief farmer and queen mother at the Akuafo Hall at Legon in Accra as part of the Hall Week Celebration.

He said the way (IPS) students handled the issue showed a new attitude of students towards school administration, which he said is very good for national development. Mr Baah Wiredu said government has donated 31 billion cedis out of the GETFUND to the University of Legon for research and expansion of lecture halls.

He said his Ministry is trying to help the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to recover loans from defaulting students so that that new applicants could benefit from the scheme. The Minister said the Ministry is preparing an Education strategic plan to improve the quality of education in both Tertiary and secondary schools.

He said every body passes through the primary and secondary schools before entering the universities so the quality of education at the basic level should be developed and enriched. He said the ministry is linking the university with other sister institutions in the United States as a means of helping the institutions.

He said government would soon rehabilitate the sewerage system at the University.

Mr Freddie Blay, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament said the facilities at the institution is an indictment to the older generation of this country so they have to do more to help up grade the facilities. He called upon students to show more interest in school activities and keep the environment clean.
