Students Council supports NUGS

The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the University College of Winneba (UCEW) on Wednesday expressed its support to the National Executives of National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) for rejecting the interim report of the committee set up to design a new students loan scheme.

A Statement signed by Mr George Kwadwo Ayisi, SRC President, said the report if accepted would imply fully endorsing the introduction of tuition fees. "This when done will prevent the majority of students from pursuing tertiary education and this will be a total violation of the right of the individual to have access to all levels of education in the country," it added.

Meanwhile, the SRC had appealed to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to expedite action on the loans for students of the Winneba Campus of UCEW since none of them had received any amount.

It said the undue delay in releasing at least the first instalment to the loans seemed to be defeating its purpose. The statement also called on the government to intervene in the new grading system for polytechnics.
