Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has cautioned motorists to desist from taking caffeinated drinks and in some cases hard drugs to stay awake during long hour journeys.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb on Monday August 4,2025, he advised motorists to park at safe spots and rest when they are tired from driving for long distances.

He urged both private and commercial drivers to stop taking hard substances under the pretest of staying awake while they are on the road; stating that substances in some caffeinated drinks and some drugs impair their vision, sometimes leading to accidents on the road.

“I am advising drivers to desist from taking caffeinated drinks and hard drugs. This impairs their vision sometimes, which sometimes lead to major accidents on our roads,” Amaliba said.

While admitting that other factors like bad roads and indiscipline account for most of the accidents that occur on the road, he appealed to motorists to demonstrate responsibility anytime they are behind the wheels of a vehicle to curb the dangerously high rate of accidents on the road.

On the part of pedestrian, he noted that jay walking and disregard for road safety rules are punishable by law.

“Jay walking is an offence in the country. I am urging pedestrians to use the Zebra crossing and the footbridges. They should be discipline on the road to minimise road accidents,” he stated.

He added that safety on the roads is a collaborative effort and appealed to both pedestrians and motorists to do their bit to help curb the carnage on our roads.
