Stop parading minors as witches & wizards on TV – Social Welfare

Social Welfare says it is illegal to parade minors as witches and wizards Social Welfare says it is illegal to parade minors as witches and wizards

The Head of Department of Social Welfare and Development of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly [CCMA], Wallace Acheampong has denounced the practice of minors being paraded as alleged witches and wizards by some pastors on Televisions.

The dastardly act, he explains causes children to be stigmatized with many feeling shy to even go to school or socialise in society.

Mr. Acheampong said it is illegal for pastors to parade minors on Televisions citing the Children’s Act which guarantees the protection of the identity of minors from the public even in a case of criminal conduct by the minors.

He questioned the involvement of the media in such an illegal practice citing the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) code of ethics which mandates media practitioners to protect the rights of minors accused of criminal cases.

He contended that the main challenge of dealing with such illegal practice is the failure of parents or people to make complaints which could serve as a basis for prosecution.
