Stepping Stone Montessori holds 9th graduation ceremony

The Proprietress of Stepping Stone Montessori School located at Santa Maria, a suburb of Accra, Madam Vivian Mintah has expressed satisfaction about government's effort to roll out the new education curriculum but wants it to be reformed to cover more subjects in order to achieve its purpose.

The 12-subject curriculum which is expected to start in September was designed to aid provide pupils with the needed foundation skills required for lifelong learning, creativity and national development.

It also seeks to help pupils in kindergarten (KG) to primary six from the next academic year to put a premium on reading, writing, arithmetic and creativity.

But Madam Vivian Mintah believes the new curriculum does not conform to the right standard and still lacks some vital subjects to ease teaching and learning including the art of reading and writing taking kids from the lowest level of the education ladder into consideration.

Explaining her views, she said, "it's like when you look at the the literacy syllabus under the English Language, they don't have anything like Phonics there right from the Preschool level".

"I've learnt we should start from age three (3) which I think in my perspective is wrong. But it should rather start from zero age".

"Because kids start learning the sound right from age zero and then when they get to age 3, the child can put the sounds together to blend and give you the word. So if this is something we are going to start from class three (3), how is the teacher going to do it?, she quizzed.

Madam Mintah made her views about the new education curriculum known in an interview with journalists on the sidelines of her outfits graduation ceremony which was held on Saturday July 27, 2019 at the school premise at Santa Maria, a suburb of Accra.

The colourful ceremony marked the graduation of thirty-seven young kindergarten scholars to Class One.

The highpoint of the ceremony was the presentation of certificates of merit to the young graduates but the thrill of the occasion came from a delightful line-up of choreographed, poem recitals and Ghanaian dances and drama sketches by school children.

Established by Madam Vivian Mintah in 2007 with the mandate to turn around the fortunes of many Ghanaian children with sound academic education and good moral upbringing as working tools, Stepping Stone Montessori began with three (3) pupils who are basically family members. However, within one term, the number rose six.

Currently with the population of over 200 students the school is touted as one of the best in the area wholly responsible for effective teaching, learning and early development of children into adolescents.

The School is run by Mad. Vivian Mintah with support of some dedicated staff and non-teaching personnel who are committed to shaping and nurturing the talents of children to become useful to the society when they grow up.
