Steel bender jailed for biting off electrician's ear

A steel bender, who bit off the ear of of an electrician, chewed and spat the remains on the ground, was on Monday sentenced to seven years imprisonment in hard labour by an Accra circuit court.

Kweku Senanu, in addition, would pay a compensation of GH¢1,000.00 to the complainant, John Oteba. In default, Senanu would serve eight months imprisonment. Sentences are to run consecutively.

Senanu pleaded with the court to forgive him and that he was not going to repeat his conduct again. The court, presided over by Ms Ellen Vivian Amoah, convicted him on his own plea expressing disgust at Senanu’s conduct adding that he had breached the fundamental rights of the complainant.

According to the court, Senanu’s action was going to affect the complainant’s social chances, especially in the selection of a wife. The court wondered how a human being would bit his colleague's ear whiles blood oozed out until that part of the ear was severed.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agnes Boafo, told the court that on May 30 this year, at about 1930 hours, the complainant, Mr Oteba, and his workers on board a truck had closed from work and were returning home.

ASP Boafo said on reaching a suburb of Ashongman called Mangoase, the complainant stop his truck to buy rechargeable unit phone card when Senanu confronted him as to why he failed to indicate his traffic indicator before halting.

Prosecution said this led to the exchange of words between Senanu and the complainant. Senanu then attacked the complainant and succeeded in biting off his ear, chewed it and spat on the ground.

According to prosecution, the complainant was currently awaiting a plastic surgery. During investigation, Senanu admitted the offence in his caution statement.
