State and Church must work together – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has said that the State and the Church have a duty to play by working together to bring the people out of poverty, disease and squalor.

“After all, when Jesus Christ came to this world He provided the people with basic needs like food, water, cloth and shelter to the homeless,” he said.

The remarks were made in a statement read on his behalf by Mr Djanmah Vanderpuye, the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister at the 10th anniversary celebration of “Ghana Day” instituted by the Full Gospel Church International at the Emmanuel Mensah Chapel in Tema Community ‘1’.

The Ghana Day is celebrated by all the branches of the church across the country after Ghana’s 6th March anniversary celebration every year.

President Mahama said the churches are playing a big role in inculcating moral discipline into society but a lot more needs to be done, adding that, “It is about time the churches purge themselves of the Charlatans, false prophets and the workers of lawlessness, who have nothing to offer but to take advantage of innocent, God-fearing ones.”

He said it was significant for religious bodies to lead the way to uphold the dignity of all people irrespective of their race, colour, religion, political affiliation and social standing.

He said government was grateful to the Churches for their efforts to solve some of the numerous problems that confront society by targeting the most disadvantaged.

Rt Rev Samuel Noi Mensah, the President of the Full Gospel Church International said Ghanaians must strive to build a united Ghana devoid of ethnicity, and that, politicians must show the way.

Other dignitaries at the occasion were Naa Torshie Addo, MP for Tema West, Mr Titus Glover, MP Tema East, Mr Alfred Kwame Agbesi, MP for Ashaiman, Mr Isaac Ashai Odamten, the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Tema and representatives of the Speaker of Parliament.
