St. Monica’s College inaugurates ICT laboratory

St. Monica’s College of Education at Asante Mampong has inaugurated a 170 capacity Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Laboratory to equip its students with requisite computer skills to discharge their teaching duties effectively after the completion of their programmes.

The US$ 11,000 facility, which comes with swivel chairs, two overhead projectors and air conditioners, was financed by the American government through the US Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Project

Mrs Christiana Adwoa Sobotie, Principal of the College speaking at the inauguration said the ICT laboratory would not only provide the teacher trainees with the requisite skills to execute content and pedagogical knowledge effectively in classrooms but would also expand computer training and education, especially in rural communities.

‘‘Considering also the current and modernized trend of demand of ICT in everyday life, it was therefore imperative to have a well-equipped computer laboratory to provide the needed tuition and hands-on activities for the teacher trainees to promote effective teaching, research and learning outcomes in schools’’, she stated.

Mrs Sobotie said the management of the College has put in place reliable internet connectivity, a server room, an ICT office, while procurement process had been commenced to acquire additional 120 desktop computers for the laboratory.

She praised the US Embassy in Ghana for the kind gesture and appealed to other key stakeholders to support the College to improve teaching and learning.

Mr Gunner Hamlyn, Economic Officer at the US Embassy in Ghana in a message read on behalf of Ambassador Stephanie S. Sullivan, praised the College for its contribution towards the training of quality teachers to educate Ghanaian children.

He said the US Embassy in Ghana was committed to supporting the promotion of quality education delivery in Ghana and called on the management of the College to take appropriate steps to ensure regular maintenance of the facility.
