ACCRA, MARCH 2, GNA - A large number of wooden and iron structures belonging to squatters on the Redco land near the Madina Zongo junction were levelled to the ground on Tuesday by a bulldozer. The exercise was carried out in the morning under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Police in-charge of Operations, Mr. B.G. Dery.

He said the demolition exercise was carried out by the Task Force of the Amasaman District Assembly and was supervised by the Ghana Police.

In an interview with the GNA, Mr. B.G. Dery said the squatters have for the past three years been informed to vacate the area and this had fallen on deaf ears.

He added that just last week, the squatters were again informed to evacuate their belongings but they refused to do so.

The Assistant Commissioner Of Police, Mr. Dery added that the area has been the hide-out of armed robbers and wee peddlers and this has therefore, necessitated the immediate ejection of the squatters.

He added that during the demolition exercise, quantities of leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp were found and three persons have been arrested by the police, while the rest took to their heels.

According to GNA, many women wept and wailed bitterly Because their properties, including foodstuff, personal belongings and stocks of spare parts have been destroyed. He added that the presence of the police, who wielded guns enabled the exercise to be carried out successfully.
