Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has reiterated the need for Ghana’s legislature to be liberated from its current status as a tenant of the State House and provided with its own premises befitting its role as an arm of government.

Speaking on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the launch of Parliament’s five-year corporate strategic plan, Bagbin lamented the infrastructural limitations that continue to hinder the work of the House.

According to him, even routine decision-making has been difficult, as consensus is often required before voting can take place.

“We have been crying and I hope you support us in that… at least we should be liberated from being tenants of the State House to having our own premises as an arm of government,” Bagbin said.

He further disclosed that Parliament is piloting an electronic voting system to ease challenges encountered during decision-making on the floor.

Bagbin also emphasised that the strategic plan is designed to strengthen Parliament’s institutional capacity, improve efficiency, and ensure that the legislature is equipped to meet the demands of modern governance.

“Now we are trying to upload an IT where we can have e-voting in the House. We are starting the pilot, and we believe it will ease up all the struggles you usually see when it comes to decision taking,” he added.
