Spain’s Ambassador to Ghana, Ángel Lossada Torres-Quevedo, has expressed support for Ghana’s national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, ahead of the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico.

The Ambassador gave the assurance when he visited the team at the Mendiata Hotel in Accra on Thursday, October 29, where he met 15 players and members of the technical team.

He encouraged the players to remain focused on their World Cup campaign, describing them as champions and pledging his continued support.

“For me, you are allies,” he told the players.

He said that although he would support Spain if the two countries met in the World Cup final, his solidarity with the Black Challenge extended beyond football to the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

“At the end of the day, sport is important, but the rights of persons with disabilities are more important. You are already very good, and I wish you all the best,” he said.

The Ambassador’s visit highlighted the importance of promoting inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities through sport and international cooperation.

President of the Ghana Amputee Football Association, Foster Kwarteng, thanked the Ambassador for his longstanding support for disability sport and his engagement with the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana.

“What you’ve done for the National Paralympic Committee and persons with disabilities, I personally cannot thank you enough. You’ve always opened your doors to us, and I thank you for that,” Kwarteng said.

The Black Challenge will compete against Colombia, Angola and Iraq in Group D at the tournament in Mexico.

Ghana goes into the competition after winning back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations titles, with the team hoping to build on its continental success and win the World Cup.

The team’s participation is expected to raise Ghana’s profile in amputee football and promote greater recognition of the abilities and rights of persons with disabilities.
