Songhor salt lagoon belongs to a clan- Chiefs

Korlekope, Sept 12, GNA- The Tekperbiawe Divisional Council on Thursday said the council is the legally recognised custodian of the Ada Songor Lagoon and will resist any attempts to transact business with any illegal group.

"We of the Tekperbiawe clan will use the processes of the law to stop any attempt to wrongly apply the laws of the country to discriminate against us and make us the second class citizens when it comes to encouraging private enterprise as the engine of economic development in Ghana."

This was contained in a nine-point resolution signed by Mr Samuel Alini Tei Tsirapah, secretary of the Standing Committee on Songhor and read by Mr Joseph Amartey Tachie, a member of the committee. It said any person who enters any portion of the lagoon and its adjoining lands without the consent of the clan is a trespasser and "we shall use lawful means to eject him."

The resolution said PNDC law 287 only vests in the government the legal title of portions of the lagoon and adjoining lands in trust for the owners, meaning that any investor who wants to do business legally and beneficially in the area need to consult the owners for the necessary directions.

It called on the Minister of Justice and Attorney General to clarify the law and consider repealing it in the interest of justice.
