Some people could not register as voters

Kumasi, Aug 13, GNA- Due to long queues, overcrowding and other problems at some voters registration centres in the Kumasi Metropolis, some people could not register.

Reporters of the Ghana News Agency (GNA), observed this when they visited some centres in the Metropolis on Tuesday.

Mr Solomon Addai, Registration Officer at Old Tafo Ahenbronum and Santan Electoral Areas, told GNA that 3,800 people had so far registered their names as at 1200 hours on Tuesday since the voters registration exercise commenced on July 31, 2008.

Nana Anthony Berko, Registration Officer at Asem and Fante New Town Electoral Areas, said 2,950 people also registered as at 1200 hours. He said following the extension of the exercise from Sunday to Tuesday, there was shortage of registration forms which were later replaced by unscanable forms.

Nana Berko explained that those who were registered with unscanable forms would take their photographs later to ensure the completion of the process.

At Nsuase and Baamu Dominase Electoral Areas at Adum in Kumasi, Mr Tony Bosco, the Officer there, disclosed that 2,426 people had registered as at 1100 hours on Tuesday.

The atmosphere at all the centres was calm with the presence of security officers to maintain peace and order as well as New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Party (NDC) polling agents. The exercise which should have ended on July 10, 2008, was extended to July 12, 2008, by the EC due to complaints received by the Electoral Commission.
