A leading member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has blamed former President John Agyekum Kufuor for the prevailing challenges in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He accused him of remaining silent while the party suffered what appeared to be an internal breakdown under the leadership of former President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Wednesday, July 16, and monitored by Ghana Web, Solomon Owusu expressed disappointment in former President Kufour’s silence over critical issues that happened within the party over the years, stating that he expected better from someone who once inspired him to join the party.

“He was the last person I was expecting to come out at this time to speak to the challenges in the party because interestingly, he's one of the two people that inspired me in the NPP. However, his life after leaving office is nothing to write about,” he stated.

He alleged that the former President looked on while key figures like Paul Afoko, Kwabena Agyapong, and Alan Kyerematen were sidelined without speaking in their defence.

“Who do you expect to speak for you? They went after Paul Afoko, someone that was legitimately voted into his position. Did you ever hear a statement from President Kufuor?” he questioned.

“You never spoke. You behaved as a gentle giant and allowed them to remove him with impunity,” he added.

According to him, former President Kufuor’s inaction enabled what he called the destructive reign of President Akufo-Addo, accusing the former president of failing to stand up for justice and party democracy.

“He is the reason why the party has suffered these deep cracks. He sat down, unconcerned, when Nana Akufo-Addo was destroying everything,” he decried.

He added that although former President Kufuor now finds himself in a position where he may need support, many of those who would have defended him are no longer around.

“Now, they are all gone. All those who could have come to your aid are all gone. Nobody will come to your defence,” he said.

His comments come after the former President’s public expression of discontentment over being excluded from internal party consultations.
