Society of the Disabled thanks government

Aburi, Sept. 11, GNA- The Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) has expressed gratitude to the government for its commitment towards the alleviation of the plight of the disabled. The society said throug h the human centred policies instituted by the government, all social barriers in the way of the disabled had been removed to enable members to participate in all endeavours of life. The Acting President of the Society, Mr. S. Y Amakyeh, who made the commendation at the 27th anniversary of the GSPD at Aburi on Tuesday, mentioned the passage of the disability bill into law and the share of the common fund as measures that had helped the Society. He said opportunities such as higher education, formal employment and politics that were hitherto a preserved for the able bodied, were now at the reach of the disabled and thanked all who helped the society to come this far.

Mr Amakyeh indicated that about 90 percent of workers of Ashanti Shoe Factory were physically disabled while many others were employed in other institutions helping in shaping the economy. The Deputy Director of the Department of Social Welfare, Mr. Larry Bissaba said the government was committed to the well-being of all citizens, irrespective of their status to have equal opportunity to develop their talents and capabilities. He expressed gratitude that the society had appreciated the efforts of the government and urged them to take opportunity of the many avenues to develop themselves to reduce their reliance on others. Mr Bissaba however, expressed worry over the spate of street begging by persons with disabilities and called on the leadership of the society to find ways of solving that problem.
