The trial involving Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has entered its final stage at the Accra High Court, but reactions on social media have shifted attention outside the courtroom.
Some individuals linked to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including party activists such as Dzifa Gunu, have been making posts suggesting that the outcome of the case is already clear, with comments predicting that Wontumi will be jailed. Screenshots of some of these posts are being shared online and adding to public debate around the case.
The court has, however, not delivered any ruling. The judge is expected to give final judgment on July 3, 2026.
The case involves charges related to mining and environmental regulations. Under the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 995), a conviction can attract a minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum of 25 years in prison.
Wontumi, who is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was formally charged in October 2025 alongside his company, Akonta Mining Limited, and a company director, Kwame Antwi, who is currently on the run.
The prosecution, led by the Office of the Attorney General, closed its case after calling witnesses. The defence also concluded its case on June 3, 2026, after presenting its final witness, former Western Regional Minister Okyere Darko Mensah.
Both sides have now filed to submit their final written arguments by June 17, 2026, ahead of the court’s final decision.
