Social media users are having a good laugh over a BBC documentary that captures some lectures of University of Ghana –Legon and the University of Lagos, Nigeria involved in sex for grades scandal.
The act according to reports has been going on for years and it has affected the lives of many female students who go through trauma and have on several occasions considered suicide as a way out of the ‘shame’
Since the video hit social media, Ghanaians and Nigerians have voiced their anger at the actions of the lecturers while the majority of them, as usual, making a mockery of the situation, some even suggesting that swapping sex for grades is normal.
Most of the users think such an incident is not new only in higher institutions. It is a common practice in other sectors as long as getting the desired positions or promotions are concerned.
The teaser of the yet-to-be aired video has sparked a reaction among social media users and Actress Lydia Forson, Nana Aba Anamoah, Guru, and others outspoken celebrities on social media have had their take.
'Sex for grades' is a BBC Africa Eye undercover investigation into some academic institutions in West Africa which increasingly have been faced with allegations of sexual harassment by lecturers. This type of abuse is said to be endemic, but it’s almost never proven.
After gathering dozens of testimonies, BBC Africa Eye sent undercover journalists posing as students inside the University of Lagos and the University of Ghana.
Female reporters were sexually harassed, propositioned and put under pressure by senior lecturers at the institutions – all the while wearing secret cameras.
Here are a few of the tweets Ghanaweb.com has gathered, let's see how social media is making fun of the scandal:
