Social Worker Condemns Conditions In Day Care Centre

Tema, Aug 18, - The Tema Municipal Social Welfare Officer, Miss Josephine Atsu, has expressed disgust at the conditions prevailing at the Christ Revelation Church Day-Care Centre at Tema Manhean and the Good Shepherd Nursery at Community Five. All the 120 children at the Christ Revelation Day Care Centre occupy one wooden structure room which also serves as the kitchen and play ground with very little ventilation while the nursery classroom at the good shepherd school has been turned into a shop where confectionery are sold to the children. Miss Atsu made these remarks when the Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with the "Women and Children" sub-committee of the Tema Municipal Assembly toured a number of early childhood development centrres within the municipality. The two-day tour aims at highlighting the factors that impede the growth and development of the child as well as his socialisation. She said when children are given the right character training from infancy, they will not become social misfits and liabilities on their parents and society. Miss Atsu said the total neglect and disregard for some of these basic elements of responsibilities are largely accountable for the present problems of juvenile delinquency, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy. The team also visited Leonardo Junior Preparatory School, Manasseh Nursery, Bert Day Care Centre and Happy Home Nursery all in Tema Manhean.
