Court jails unemployed eight years for defilement

Accra, April 15, GNA - An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday sentenced a 30 year-old unemployed man to eight years' imprisonment for defiling a six year-old girl. Kwasi Nkrumah, who pleaded not guilty to defilement, was found guilty by the court at the end of a full trial. The court, presided over by Mrs Georgina Mensah-Datsa ordered that the sentence should take effect from the day of Nkrumah's arrest on December 22, 2006.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr George Abavelim, the prosecutor, said the victim lived with her parents at Teshie in Accra and Nkrumah lived in the same vicinity.

ASP Abavelim said at about 1000 hours on December 22, 2006, the victim went out to play with her peers and after some time, the victim's mother began to look for her.

The prosecution said the complainant later spotted the victim coming from the direction of Nkrumah's house and looking weak. When the complainant tried to ascertain from the victim what was wrong with her, she could not talk. The complainant took the victim home where she started complaining of stomach upset.

Thereafter, the complainant detected bloodstains in her private part. The prosecution said the complainant who was frightened rushed the girl to a clinic at Teshie where it was detected that the victim had been defiled. When the victim was interrogated, she disclosed that it was Nkrumah who inserted his manhood into her vagina and anus.
