Smoking ‘wee’ in prison is legal - Kumasi inmate tells police

A Prisoner name withheld has stated emphatically that smoking of marijuana popularly known as ‘wee’ is legal in some prisons across the country.

The Prisoner describes Ghana Prisons as ‘’World Market of Wee’’ saying prisoners have the right to smoke wee while spending their jail terms in prison.

Speaking in an interview with Akyeamkwaa Nana Kofi Asare on Abusus News, the prisoner who is spending a jail term in Kumasi Central Prisons shockingly said wee is sold at Kumasi Central Prison ‘’like tomatoes and Garden eggs’’.

According to him, it is not necessary for security agencies to worry themselves to arrest and jail wee smokers since they even smoke more while serving their jail term at the various prisons.

''Sometimes I ask myself that why should someone be arrested and jailed for smoking one roll of Wee while when you go to some prisons in Ghana especially Kumasi Central Prison, Wee smoking is legal. He said

‘’My brother I will not lie to you, I have been in prison for the past 4 years and they sell wee like selling vegetables at Central market”.

He added that those arrested and jailed for smoking Wee cannot change their lifestyle because they enjoy themselves with heavy wee smoking at in prison.

Donation

The Prisoner however revealed that all donations made to them by individuals, groups, churches and NGOs are not handed over to them.

“We don’t remember the last time we were served milk, sugar, cowbell coffee, cooking oil etc yet people always donate to us. We will only eat porridge with sugar and milk when visitors are coming and even that happens once a year. We are suffering too much because of the kind of treatment we are going through” he noted.

In a separate interview, Public Relation Officer (PRO) for the Kumasi Central Prison ASP Richard Bukari confirmed the selling of weed in the prison yard.

He said some supervisory bodies which include some of the police officers are behind the selling of Wee in the prison yard.

He said the prisoners buy the weed outside the prison yard when they go out to work and sometimes some officers illegally sell it to them.

He however indicated that some of these supervisory bodies have been arrested and are facing the law.

Commenting on the allegation made by the prisoner about the donations being made to them, ASP Richard Bukari refuted the claims saying there is no way prison officers will take donations made by people in the name of the prisoner’s home.

He added that, instances where officers take stuff home are when a company or an agency specifically donates to the officers.
