The Central Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with violent attacks and rioting at New Winneba, which left three people dead and about 15 others injured.

The suspects are Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22.

According to the Police, the incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when about 300 irate persons from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, stormed the New Winneba Township.

The mob allegedly attacked residents, stores and residences belonging to natives of the area, causing injuries and damage to properties.

“About 15 injured victims, including one Police officer, were sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital - Winneba.

“Three persons were confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty,” the police said in a statement dated September 2, 2026.

The Police also said a locally made single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge were retrieved from the crime scene.

Following the incident, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division, as well as the Inspector-General of Police's special team, were deployed to the area.

Two armoured vehicles from the Police National Headquarters were also deployed to reinforce security.

As part of measures to prevent further attacks, the Police said six snap checkpoints had been mounted in the area, while day and night patrols had been intensified.

Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Directorate (PID) and Criminal Investigations Department (CID) personnel have also been deployed to monitor developments.

The Police assured the public that the area remains calm, and the situation is currently under control.

The six suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations.
