Sir John should have resigned that very day – Haruna Atta

The Editor-in-Chief of the Accra Daily Mail newspaper, Alhaji Haruna Atta, has asked Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie to resign from his post as the General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party following the Supreme Court ruling on his misconduct against the court.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Gold on Tuesday, the newspaper editor explained that the NPP General Secretary, also called Sir John, should have immediately denounced his position as an ‘issue of honour’ to himself and the party.

To him, his (Sir John’s) misconduct undermines the reputation of the NPP and therefore he should not have waited for the calls from some leading members of the party, on him to resign.

In his view, the ruling by the nine Judges which saw Sir John being fined GHc5000 cedis and asked to sign a bond to be of good character, called the integrity of the NPP to question.

“The gentleman should have resigned that very day. He shouldn’t wait or have waited for any disciplinary Committee to meet to decide his fate. His fate was decided that day when he was convicted by the Supreme Court for scandalizing the court and in the process scandalizing his own party, bringing his own party into disrepute,” he said.

“I think it’s an issue of honour. He should have shown honour and have offered his resignation immediately.”
