Shoe sellers spend 480 million cedis on market stalls

Kumasi, Nov.24, GNA - The Ashanti Region Second Hand Shoe Sellers Association (ASSA), has constructed 217-market stalls at the cost of 480 million cedis at the new site of the association at Kumasi railway station.

The market, which can accommodate about 400 traders, also has an office, postal service and a public address system. Mr Charles Osei, Secretary of the association, who disclosed this at the official commissioning, on Wednesday, said members contributed 1.3 million cedis each, towards it.

The site was acquired by the association from the Ghana Railways Corporation on rental basis for 3 million cedis annually.

Mr Osei requested the Management of the corporation to extend the lease to enable them recoup the amount pumped into the venture.

He also appealed to the Ashanti Regional Minister to assist them to get funding from the poverty alleviation fund.

Mr K. Osei-Opoku, Assistant Director at Kumasi Metropolitan Authority commended them for their foresight and cautioned them against mob action and instant justice.

Mr James Kofi Kyeremo, a Principal Inspector of Taxes at the Adum Internal Revenue Services (IRS) office, said there are plans to establish tax tribunals throughout the country, adding that that no government can survive without a reliable and efficient tax system.
