On seeing her they diagnosed that the victim had miscarriage and needed urgent medical attention, to remove the dead foetus. The team lead by Dr Bernanrd Boateng-Duah, President, Dr Ernest Anderson, Secretary, Dr Patrick Quist, a Gynaecologist, Dr Dzapartey Darko, Dr Frank Agbormogyi, Dr Marian Okoh and Dr Boagye Boateng. The team had to suspend the entire exercise, quickly coordinate an ambulance, but when one was delaying Dr. Boateng-Duah, used his private vehicle to convey the victim to the Takoradi hospital where an emergency operation was done to save her life.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview on her hospital bed on Thursday, Millicent Arthur alias Mena Deku, a single mother of four, aged 24, thanked the team for coming to her aid. She said the father of her four children had divorced her, and that she did not know that she was pregnant. She however admitted that she had a boyfriend. When asked if she had registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), she said no, adding that she was also not aware of the free maternal health care programme introduced under the NHIS. Ms Arthur said she started experiencing severe stomach problems on Monday but took some pain killers.
She said on Tuesday however, when the pain became severe, she pleaded with a relation to send her to the centre where the doctors were offering free blood pressure check and giving out medications. "Since I arrived at the hospital on Tuesday, no relation had visited me, because they are afraid of paying for my medical bills," she said.
Ms Arthur commended the doctors for their sacrifices and advised pregnant women to always seek medical attention whenever they felt sick. Dr Boateng-Duah, in an interview said the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) will bear the total cost of her surgery and her other medical expenses.
