Setback for New Patriotic Party Election

Elections planned for the Nkawkaw constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) tomorrow, August 3, to select new executives for the party have suffered a setback.

This is because one of the contestants vying for the position of youth organiser, Mr. Owusu Ansah, has filed a writ at the Nkawkaw High Court for interim injunction restraining the electoral committee constituted by the NPP Nkawkaw constituency branch from conducting the elections.

In his affidavit to support the motion, the plaintiff alleged that the party's Eastern regional secretariat had instructed that the list of voters should be made from the polling station executives in the constituency.

He further alleged that even though the electoral committee had compiled the list of the delegates they had refused to make it public to facilitate his campaign.

Owusu Ansah also claimed that it had come to his knowledge that the electoral committee had made the list available to other contestants but had refused to officially release the list to him, hence putting him at a disadvantage.

He has, therefore, prayed the court to restrain the committee from organizing the election tomorrow and to suspend it until the committee makes available the electoral list to all contestants to enable them campaign for the elections fairly.

When the chairman of the electoral committee was contacted he confirmed receiving a copy of the writ, and said it had been forwarded to the appropriate quarters for redress.

Lawyer J. K. Gyimah of Accra is representing the plaintiff.
