Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona East in the Central Region, Queenstar Pokuah Sawyer, has challenged the media in Ghana to set aside seven days to discuss non-political issues.

These seven days, the legislator said, should be used to discuss “only issues concerning development in the country”.

“I will challenge the media to try to discuss more development issues than politics. In fact, I am challenging you to set at least seven days aside and discuss just development issues…no politics on those days,” the MP said.

According to her, this will go a long way to ensure that issues concerning development are brought to the fore and tackled.

The MP threw the challenge while congratulating the media on the occasion of the World Freedom Day yesterday.

“On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, I say kudos, you deserve more than a pat on the back,” she said.

The 2018 edition of the World Press Freedom Day was held in Ghana yesterday.

Sources say some series of activities associated with the occasion would be used to acknowledge the work and contributions of the media to development across the globe.

The efforts of journalists notwithstanding, Queenstar Sawyerr said she believes the media could do more if it focuses on development journalism.

The Agona East MP is noted for addressing issues concerning development in her constituency. She has so far provided various forms of philanthropic assistance to the needy in her constituency, where she is mostly known as Maame Pokuah or Obatanpa.
