The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has assured the public that President John Dramani Mahama will not seek a third term as president, despite widespread allegations and speculations from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Addressing the claims in an interview on UTV on Friday, May 9, 2025, Kwakye Ofosu dismissed the NPP’s allegations, describing them as ridiculous and baseless.

He further explained that the process of amending the constitution to allow for a third term is complex and cumbersome, as it requires a referendum in which two-thirds of Ghanaians must vote in favor of the amendment.

To him, such processes make it impossible for President Mahama to pursue such a course.

Kwakye Ofosu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, added that no political party in the country could secure the necessary two-thirds majority in a referendum, further reinforcing the impossibility of President Mahama running for a third term.

“It is not true. I’ve known President Mahama for 20 years, and he is down-to-earth. What NPP is doing is what we call ridiculous lies. Their claims are senseless lies because before an individual can change the constitution to run for a third term, the country must have a referendum.

“They are entrenched clauses, which means before it is amended, two-thirds of Ghanaians need to vote to make such an amendment. There is no way a party can get two-thirds of votes in this country, and so such a thing as Mahama running a third term is never going to happen,” he explained.

His comments follow claims made by the NPP, reinforced by the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, who alleged that certain political elements within the NDC are making plans to enable President John Dramani Mahama to serve a third presidential term.

He further asserted that the plan involves an interpretation of Article 66 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which addresses the presidential term limit.
