Send Ambassador at Large to Libya – Atik Mohammed to Akufo-Addo

The Suspended General Secretary of the Peoples National Convention (PNC) Atik Mohammed has urged President Akufo Addo to task Ambassador at Large, Dr Edward Mahama to go to Libya to assess the situation with Ghanaians in the unstable North African Country.

He believes when this task is assigned thee five-time Presidential candidate, he’ll be made more busier and will afford him more opportunity to offer his services to the country in that area.

The footage of men being auctioned off as slaves in Libya has been met with outrage and the UN Secretary-General has called on the international community to “unite in fighting this scourge”.

One of the Libyan migrants who arrived home Wednesday night has revealed that he was sold by a fellow Ghanaian in the unstable Northern Africa country.

About one hundred and twenty-seven (127) Ghanaian migrants returned from Libya with one in a critical condition.

The migrants were transported by two flights, Air Libya and Afriqiya Airways following their rescue from detention centres in Libya after reports of slave trade of migrants in the country went viral on the internet.

The visibly distressed returnee upon arrival said the experience is so harrowing he would not want to imagine it again.

“What I found myself in Libya, I wouldn’t wish for even my worst enemy, we were sold like bread by our own fellow Ghanaians. And it was a very disheartening experience. We went through the desert and some of us disappeared without a trace and others were shot and killed, luckily for some of us, we were able to escape and were arrested and brought to the deportation centre,” He told Starr News Eric Mawuena Egbeta who monitored proceedings at the Airport.

Commenting on the issue on Peace FM, Atik Mohammed was happy with how proactive the government has been in ensuring that a large number of Ghanaian migrants have returned home safely.

“I’m excited that the Foreign Ministry and all the actors in our Foreign policy have been so quick. The President himself has shown that he’s angered by what is going on in Lybia which is a good sign. On the basis of this the Foreign Minister who executes our Foreign Policy has taken immediate actions that has seen our brothers returning back home safely, the response from Ghana has been very swift and impressive.”
