President John Dramani Mahama, on Monday, September 1, 2025, officially removed Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Esaaba Torkornoo, from office on the recommendation of a committee established under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

Earlier in the day, a member of the committee, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, made a cryptic post on his Facebook page, hinting at the outcome of the investigation into the first of three petitions filed against the Chief Justice.

“The strife is over, the battle done. If you know, you know,” the former Auditor-General wrote.

Although not explicit, his post gained clearer meaning when the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced just hours later that the President had acted on the committee’s report to remove the Chief Justice.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo sacked

On April 22, 2025, President Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo after the Council of State established a prima facie case against her.

He subsequently constituted a five-member committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, to investigate the three petitions.

The Chief Justice, in various legal attempts, tried to reverse her suspension and halt the investigations but had her suits dismissed. Prior to her removal, she filed a case at the ECOWAS Court seeking $10 million in damages over what she described as a violation of her rights.

In his announcement, the President confirmed that the committee had duly established “stated misbehavior” against the Chief Justice and recommended her removal.

“Under Article 146(9), the President is required to act in accordance with the committee’s recommendation,” a statement signed by the President’s spokesperson said.
