Security personnel to remain in Yendi indefinitely

Mr Moses Bukari Mabengba, Northern Regional Minister, announced that a combined team of military and police personnel detailed at Yendi, following last Friday’s clashes between rival factions over the enskinment of a chief, is to remain in the town indefinitely .

Mr Mabengba, who is also chairman of the Regional Security Committee (REGESC), disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Tamale on Monday, after presiding over the REGSEC meeting to review the security situation in the Yendi Municipality.

He said that, the REGSEC was not leaving anything to chance, and would ensure that law and order was maintained in the municipality.

On Friday, April 20, 2012, a misunderstanding ensued between two factions over the enskinment of a chief in the Dagbon State and both factions used foul words against each other.

This resulted in clashes leading to the death of a man, whose name was only given as Abass, believed to have been shot by an assailant, who is yet to be identified.

Mr Mabengba said, though no arrest had been made so far, the Regional Administration was seeking counsel from the Regional State Attorney on how to proceed or handle the situation.

He said calm had been restored to Yendi and the security personnel had also escorted members of the faction, who were being attacked to their destinations.

Mr Mabengba said that, the Regent of Yendi would on Tuesday, April 24, hold a meeting with his chiefs adding that security personnel would be on stand-by to maintain law and order, to ensure that nothing untoward happen.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Police Command said it was conducting investigations into the incident.**
