Scrap PURC now! - Bernard Mornah

General Secretary of the People's National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah says government should "scrap" the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) for increasing utility tariffs.

Bernard Mornah registered his displeasure with the new adjustments in utility charges, hence calling on the Government of Ghana to check on the activities of the PURC.

The PURC recently increased electricity and water tariffs by 6.45 and 4.54 percent respectively. According to the Commission, the increments are part of plans to address the challenges confronting the energy sector of the country.

But speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" programme, Bernard Mornah opined that the action taken by the PURC is distasteful and should not be encouraged by government and the public.

To him, if the PURC is "doing things that are inimical to the survival of the people of Ghana, the workers of Ghana; government should find a way of scrapping it."

He appealed to the government to take the necessary action to resolve the issues with utility tariffs in the nation.

In his view, Ghanaians should "be able to drink water...You should be able to find a place to sleep. You should be able to get basic healthcare.

“If you have a social democratic party, a social democratic government; you cannot get up in the morning and increase utility prices and turn out and stay aside and say that it is the PURC. We’re tired of these issues. They should find a better excuse.”
