Scientists from Ghana training at US Nuclear Lab

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) - Nuclear specialists at the los Alamos National Laboratory spent the past week training a team from the African nation of Ghana.

The two scientists from Ghana were studying how the lab oversees a program to retrieve surplus radioactive material from other nations. The Off-Site Recovery Program retrieves packages the material for shipment and arranges long-term storage.

The lab's program is part of the National Nuclear Security Administration's program to keep civilian nuclear materials out of the hands of terrorists. Last month about 12 pounds of spent nuclear fuel were transported from Turkey.
