Wangarakrom (WR), March 5, GNA - The management of Anglogold Ashanti Mine at Tarkwa has spent about 100,000 dollars in the provision of educational infrastructure to improving living standards of the people.
These included provision of school buildings, teaching materials, scholarships, teachers' incentive package and refresher courses. This was announced by Mr David Renner, Managing Director of Anglogold Ashanti Mine at Tarkwa at the inauguration of a three-classroom block and three teachers' quarters for Wangarakrom and Badukrom near Tarkwa. He said management had sponsored and continued to sponsor 19 students in senior high schools and technical institutions in the Region.
Mr Renner pointed out that education was a vital ingredient that could assist the country to overcome its high illiteracy rate and the elimination of poverty among the citizenry. Madam Catherine Davies, Tarkwa-Nsuaem Director of Education appealed to the management to expand the capacity of educational infrastructure for the communities to accommodate more pupils and teachers.
She appealed to the management and land owners to accelerate documentation on the land to prevent encroachment, because lack of proper documentation on some school lands had led to encroachment. Nana Kingsley Awudu, Caretaker of Wangarakrom expressed appreciation to the management for the projects and appealed for the recruitment of indigenes to reduce unemployment in the community. Nana Awudu appealed to the management to provide the community with potable water and electricity to enable them develop small scale businesses in the area.
"Our children's education would improve if we have access to electricity to facilitate their studies," he said.
