School enrolment still low in three northern schools

Dalun (N/R), Nov. 27, GNA - Prof Abubakr Al-Hassan, Chairman of the Ghana Development Communities Association (GDCA), a non-governmental organisation that Denmark funds, has said illiteracy among the youth in the three northern regions was still high.

He said school enrolment, despite the introduction of the Capitation Grant and the School Feeding Programme, was also low as compared to other parts of the country.

Prof Al-Hassan said this at the opening of a seminar dubbed: the "Denmark Seminar" of the GDCA at Dalun on Saturday which was on the theme: "Young Voices".

He said school dropout rate among girls was high at the upper primary and junior secondary school levels and unemployment situation was equally disturbing.

Therefore, Prof Al-Hassan appealed to stakeholders in education to address the problem to enable the youth of the area to contribute to national development.
