School Kids Fed With Contaminated Rice

PUPILS OF Odurokrom D/A Primary School near Goaso in the Asunafo North Municipal Assembly of the Brong Ahafo region have been suffering from unusual stomach upset after eating contaminated food cooked by caterers of the School Feeding Programme.

The children experience running stomach that last a whole day anytime they eat the weevil-infested rice brought to the school by officials of the Ghana National School Feeding Programme.

However, the caterer, Esther Ayisi and her cooks, who are aware of the bad state of the rice, do not eat the food they cook for the children, claiming that it is not good for them.

Teachers and parents of the children confirmed to DAILY GUIDE that anytime the children ate the weevil-infested rice, they came home complaining of stomach aches and passed stool the day whole day.

Several bags of rice in the storeroom of the caterer have been infested with weevils. However, the caterer continues to cook the rice for the children.

A local contractor who supplies the rice to the school, one Madam Melie, confirmed that the bags of rice were brought from the national office of the School Feeding Programme, adding that, the bags of rice were the only rice available for the children.
