The Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has sparked controversy after a viral video on X captured him handing over a gift of dollar bills to Evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, the founder and leader of Heaven Way Church.
The video circulating on social media showed Gyamfi standing beside his white Range Rover, posing for a photo with Nana Agradaa, who had her arm around him. The two engaged in a brief conversation before Agradaa made a remark that prompted Gyamfi to open the back door of his vehicle and sat down to count several US dollar bills.
As he does so, Agradaa insists that he hand over all the notes instead of selecting a few. She then grabs the entire sum from his hands and flaunts the dollar bills to onlookers, declaring, "I have taken dollars from Sammy Gyamfi."
Moments later, Gyamfi’s white Range Rover is seen speeding off.
Aftermath of the video and Agradaa’s response
The footage has ignited public outrage, with many notable personalities and Ghanaians questioning how an individual in a government position could afford such an extravagant lifestyle, especially after the recent launch of the Code of Conduct by the government.
Amid the backlash, Nana Agradaa has responded to critics, clarifying that she personally requested the money from Sammy Gyamfi.
"The truth is, I told him my problem and asked him to give me something for fuel. I'm the one who asked for the money. If I meet a minister or MP, I'll ask for dollars, simple.
"Sammy Gyamfi advised me not to insult Owusu-Bempah anymore and to stay out of politics because I have my own platform and should focus on my work. He told me if I ever had legitimate information about allegations against the NDC, I should go through the right channels," she said.
Personalities who have called for his dismissal
Numerous prominent Ghanaian figures are mounting pressure on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss Sammy Gyamfi over the scandal.
Among those calling for punitive action against the Mahama appointee are Frank Bannor, a Development Economist and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy.
The Executive Director of Transparency International Ghana, Mary Awelana Addah, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to act decisively in response to the money Sammy Gyamfi gave to Nana Agradaa.
An economist and risk analyst, Theo Acheampong, has also weighed in on the controversy, urging President Mahama to take decisive action against Gyamfi.
A private legal practitioner and politician, Captain Nkrabea Effah Dartey (Rtd), also says that Gyamfi's actions appear to be a deliberate test of President John Mahama's resolve to enforce the Code of Conduct for appointees.
The Editor of Newscenta Newspaper, Elvis Darko, has also issued a strong warning to President Mahama, cautioning that any failure to dismiss Sammy Gyamfi from his position as Acting Chief Executive Editor Officer of the Ghana Gold Board could significantly undermine the credibility of the recently launched Code of Conduct for presidential appointees.
Sammy Gyamfi apologises
Sammy Gyamfi has apologised to Ghanaians for the huge sum of money he gave to Nana Agradaa.
In a post shared on Sunday, May 12, 2025, Sammy Gyamfi acknowledged the massive criticisms that have followed the incident over the past 24 hours.
He explained that the gesture was meant to be a private act of kindness.
"Folks, I have taken notice of the wave of criticisms against my person in the last 24 hours. To clarify, this was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and life-long custom of lending a helping hand to people in need," he wrote on his social media account.
He expressed regret that the act, which he believed was private, found its way into the public space.
Chief of Staff probes Sammy Gyamfi
The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has meanwhile summoned Sammy Gyamfi, after the video of him went viral, allegedly showing him giving an undisclosed amount of US dollars to Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist.
According to a report by citifmonline.com, Gyamfi has been summoned to explain the circumstances surrounding the transaction, which has sparked widespread public criticism and raised concerns about the ethical conduct of public officials.
