The Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has assured that the government will settle all outstanding salary arrears owed to nurses and teachers before the end of the year.
Addressing participants at the Ghana Health and Labour Summit in Accra last week, the minister described the ongoing salary delays as unacceptable and said urgent steps were being taken to resolve them.
“Between now and the next one month, at least before the end of the year, we will address the problem,” he pledged.
“It is an unbearable contradiction that those safeguarding our health and educating our future generations must face such challenges,” he said.
He revealed that his ministry is working closely with the Ministries of Finance, Health, and Education to “cut through bureaucratic tangles” and ensure the affected workers receive their due compensation without further delay.
The minister reaffirmed that dignity at work must include prompt and fair pay, noting that healthcare workers and teachers play an indispensable role in national development.
Employment minister rallies support for healthier workplaces
“Dignity at work means predictable, prompt, and decent compensation. We owe it a duty to ensure salary issues are curtailed and do not aggravate the plight of our dear nurses and teachers,” he said.
He urged employers across all sectors to show leadership by prioritising employee welfare and timely remuneration, adding that worker well-being remains central to Ghana’s economic growth.
Dr Pelpuo further called on trade unions, professional associations, and civil society to continue advocating for policies that protect worker welfare and ensure fairness across the labour landscape.
“We must no longer separate health from work; they are two sides of the same coin. Ghana must become a model for Africa and beyond, pioneering workplaces that protect, empower, and inspire every citizen,” he said.
He also disclosed that regional task forces have been established under his ministry to monitor worker welfare nationwide and ensure that all workplaces adhere to fair labour standards.
