The Chief Justice, Mrs Sophia Akuffo, has said it was time humankind took up environmentally conscious living to save the earth from its current path of depletion.

She said this would require sacrifices, community spirit, and exemplary leadership towards environmental care.

Mrs Akuffo was addressing students from selected schools in the Volta Region in Ho, during her "Special Mentoring Programme", which was on the theme “I Pledge Myself to the service of Ghana”.

The Chief Justice asked stakeholders to help produce “good environmentalists, who will come up with sustainable earth saving methods”, and also challenged the youth to develop the habit of assuming responsibility for the environment.

“When we take care of our environment, we are in the service of our nation. And It is my hope this generation would produce future initiators and inventors who are going to come up with more environmentally useful and environmentally sustaining means of holding our water, for example, so that we can one day become completely plastic free”, she stated.

Mrs Akuffo urged the young generation to set goals and develop the zeal to serve the nation early in their lives, and must be encouraged to consider themselves “duty bound to brighten the corner where they are”.

The Chief Justice however bemoaned the increasing abuse of drugs, and described the situation as a “growing curse”, which must be halted.

She said it was unfortunate that medicines meant to heal were being abused as sedatives, and advised the youth to “stay close to God and seek wisdom”.
