STMA launches sanitation calendar

Takoradi, Sept. 25, GNA – Mr. Herbert Henry Hans, Takoradi Sub-Metro Chairman on Saturday called on communities within the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis to form a Sanitation Taskforce to clean the metropolis of filth.

The Taskforce, to be headed by the various assembly members and unit committee heads in the communities, have the responsibility of ensuring regular clean-ups of all kinds of filth particularly in the major streets and market places.

Speaking at the launch of the Environmental Sanitation Calendar for the STMA, Mr. Hans said the cities were gradually being choked with filth adding, “Almost all houses within the metropolis is very weedy, a worrying sight for the oil city”.

He added that the problem of choked gutters, grown weeds, bushy areas and general poor health conditions within the country was as a result of the negligence on the part of individuals and societies.

The launch of the sanitation task force also marked the first clean-up exercise at the Takoradi market to rid the various shops and open spaces of dirt and rodents.

The market women together with members of the Takoradi city council carried out the exercise as early as 0700 hours.

The sanitation calendar proposes the last Saturday of every month for a general desilting works in gutters and cleaning of major markets and communities.
