SPPC Workers demonstrate against Management

Tema, Nov. 30, GNA -- More than 70 workers of the Super Paper Products Company (SPPC) in Tema, on Monday embarked on a peaceful demonstration against Management.

The irate workers said they had lost confidence in the leadership of management, which they alleged was characterized by inefficiency, corrupt= ion and poor conditions of service.

In a nine-point resolution, the workers called for the immediate removal of the Managing Director and the Chief Finance Officer for mismanaging the company.

They alleged that the managerial incompetence of the two had virtually led to the collapse of the company.

The demonstrators further alleged that the company's concluded Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) of 2009 had still not been signed by management.

According to them, there had been delayed payment of salaries, failure to pay SNNIT contributions of workers to the pension fund.

They alleged that Management's failure to pay workers' Provident Fund had demoralized workers. The Ghana News Agency's attempt to get Management's side of the story, proved futile, as the demonstrators had dragged them out of the company's premises. Mr. Richard Ankrah, General-Secretary of the local union, said that the only condition that would allow the two officers entry into the premises was for them to sign the concluded CBA, and pay in full, all workers' arrears before December 31.
