SKB Asante jabs Judges, Lawyers over SC ruling

Paramount Chief of Asokore Asante, Prof S K B Asante, has expressed befuddlement at the “ignorance” of some Judges and Lawyers about judgments of the Supreme Court.

“I see very little evidence of Lawyers, even members of the Bench, other than Supreme Court Judges, reading Supreme Court decisions”, the renowned international Arbitrator told an audience at a colloquium organised by the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in Accra Friday.

According to him, “it’s amazing the kind of ignorance which is displayed by aspirants to high judicial office”.

He said: “I really think that the work of the Supreme Court will be appreciated if the decisions were actually read.

The Honorary Chancellor of the Graduate School of Governance and Leadership, and Visiting Professor at the University of Ghana, also told the forum that he was proud of the work of the Supreme Court under the 1992 Constitution.

“I’m reasonably satisfied with the work of the Supreme Court. If you consider the work they have done since the coming into force of the Constitution; the elaboration of the various constitutional principles, I think it’s a significant constitutional jurisprudence and that is something that we should be proud of”.

The forum was themed: “understanding the operations and mandate of the Supreme Court in Ghana’s constitutional democracy”.

Other discussants at the forum were retired former Supreme Court Judge, Prof Kofi Date-Bah; Prof P. E. Bondzi-Simpson, Dean of the faculty of law at the University of Cape Coast; Ghana Bar Association President, Nene Amegatcher and former Attorney General and Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey.
