SHS graduate takes 1 cedi a month to teach children in Jegun

“I just want to help; it is not the money that I need,” were the selfless words of 20-year-old Idi Inusah, a Senior High School (SHS) graduate who devotes his time and resources to helping some deprived children of Jegun in the Savelugu-Nanton district, get some basic education.

A report by GhOne reporter Ridwan Karim Dini Osman revealed Jegun as a community which has a population of about 600 people struggling with basic necessities, essential for human development such as healthy and portable drinking water and toilet facilities.

The report revealed Inusah using an improvised structure for a classroom to contain his students as he takes them through mathematical and alphabetical lessons.

In an interview with the reporter, Inusah said, “I know all my students, I know their names and where they live. When they don’t come to school I go and visit and find out why they did not come.”

He added that even though the parents appreciate his efforts and give him some money monthly, what drives him is his passion to help as he puts less focus on the money.

“The parents contribute and give me money. Without their contributions, I don’t know what I would do. I just want to help, it is not the money that I need. I just want to help them,” he added.

When asked how much he received from the parents Inusah said, “Sometimes one cedi each, and sometimes two cedis.”

Parents in the community knowing the essence of education, endeavor to get their children a place at Inusah’s school despite their scares resources.

Some children are seen barefooted with home cloths carrying stools and chairs from their homes to their ‘school’, while the younger ones are accompanied by the parents.

A study by United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) suggests that children such as those in Jegun are prone to missing out on education, a situation they say “could have a lifelong consequence that often means that the next generation would start out at a disadvantage creating a cycle that is inimical to societal development.”
