Director-General of the National Service Authority, Ruth Dela Seddoh, has called on women to carefully plan childbirth, citing the difficulties of balancing work and motherhood without adequate support systems.
In an interview with MzGee, Seddoh said her personal experiences as a working mother exposed significant gaps in childcare support, particularly for women without family assistance.
“If you don’t have anybody around you, it will be extremely difficult,” she said.

She noted that while some women rely on relatives such as mothers or siblings for support, many do not have that option, making it harder to manage both professional and family responsibilities.
Seddoh also pointed to broader systemic issues, including limited access to reliable childcare services and concerns about the quality of care provided.
“It is difficult to leave your child with strangers and be at peace at work,” she said.
She further suggested that investment in childcare facilities could help address the challenge, describing it as both a social necessity and an economic opportunity.
“For those who have the capacity, putting up such centres is a good opportunity,” she said.
Her comments come amid ongoing discussions about maternity leave policies, childcare infrastructure and workplace flexibility, particularly for women in demanding careers.
